On the lookout for a girlfriend, lonesome women's-magazine journalist Eamon Donaghy invites his boss Zoe to dinner with some of his friends from college: Patrick & Beatrice Dempsey and Kath Shand, at the Dempseys' house, as usual, and to their continuing despair. The evening goes so badly that Patrick determines to find Eamon another outlet, and gets a recommendation for a prostitute for Eamon to visit. Things go so well for Eamon with Natalia, that they start going out together, and Eamon invites her to dinner with the others, but things don't go so well when they go to a party together and she recognises an old client in Patrick's boss George Lacey. The Dempseys want to get their eldest son Brendon into a good local Catholic school, but have to get him baptised first. They volunteer Eamon & Kath as god-parents, even though the two don't get on well together. Patrick interviews for a new secretary, but his boss overrules his choice, and he is landed with the inexperienced, though pretty, Melissa. At home, Kath has to have her mother move in as a flatmate.

Patrick & Beatrice's plans for a romantic weekend away in the country without the children are thrown into chaos when his boss orders him to take a visiting potential client, Klaus, along too. Beatrice then invites Kath for company, and somehow Eamon and his date Zoe get dragged along as well. Klaus concentrates his attentions on Zoe, to Eamon's dismay, and also to Kath's, as she confesses to Beatrice that she fancies Klaus. Klaus's huge appetite, for both food and sex, turn out to be his undoing when he discovers the 'happy cake' that Kath has made to make the weekend seem less disastrous for her and Eamon.

Patrick & Beatrice continue their efforts to get Brendon into a good, Catholic school, deciding against moving out into the suburbs, or North London, and have to grip their teeth and get on well at the local church, even though the traditional Father Anthony is temporarily replaced with the 'happy clappy' Father Nathan. The local video-hire shop's staff persuade Eamon to sign up for their unorthodox dating service, through which he meets Jenifer, with whom he gets on very well, until Patrick spots that she goes to the same church; Eamon is ardently anti-religious, and breaks things off with Jenifer, though regrets it immediately, but it's too late. Meanwhile, Kath embarks on a relationship with Miles, a bee enthusiast, until Kath realises that he takes his interest over the boundary into obsession.

Meanwhile, Eamon & Kath are having problems with their charges, and reluctantly decide to call in Kath's mother, but she disappears en route, so Eamon has to go out in search for her, while Kath stays at the Dempseys' house and becomes increasingly distressed.
