Although most westerns are set in the 19th century American west, hence the name, not all of them are. Like the United States Australia also had a frontier to explore in the 19th century. Cash and Company was an Australian western set in Victoria of the gold rush era in the 1850's. At that time Australia was very much dominated by the bureaucratic ways of British rule.

One man who was opposed to the ways of British rule was an Irish-Australian man named Sam Cash (played by Russian Serge Lazareff). Cash is a tough, resourceful and likeable man who has never been in any trouble with the law. That is, until he met American Joe Brady. Joe was an adventurer with a tendency to make witty remarks and get into fights. The pair wind up getting on the wrong side of the law when they come to the defense of a miner being victimized by Lt. Keogh, a cruel and ambitious police lieutenant. The pair thus become fugitives of justice and find themselves having a variety of adventures while trying to stay one step ahead of Lt. Keogh and his troopers, and clear their names. If they do ever clear their names then maybe Cash can settle down with Jessica Johnson, a wealthy and attractive young widow who fancies Cash.

The series was shot at the Emu Bottom Homestead about 25 miles from Melbourne.
