    Magellan is in Texas publicising her new book about her work with Creek, while he remains in England, trying to become an advisor to American escapologist Alan Kalanak. On the set of the film Black Snow in Hampshire, the leading actress Vivian Brodie is killed, apparently through a firmly closed window, and without motive. Together with Kalanak's agent, Carla Borrega, he sets out to solve the mystery. The hunt takes them to the isolated Doomdorf Castle in Scotland, which belongs to the film's director Herman Grole, where there is a dungeon with a terrifying reputation.

    Carla Borrego has taken up a new role on a 'true crime' TV show, produced by her new husband, Brendan Baxter, and she is horrified when he invites Creek to assist them in their investigations of a series of murders seemingly committed by a man wearing a Davy-Crockett-style coonskin cap. Then Sgt Heather Davey, the woman police officer reconstructing one of the murders is shot at, and later she is found strangled in a locked gym. The coonskin cap murderer is soon found, but the killer of Sgt Davey is harder to identify.

His secretary Dorothy Moon, becomes suspicious of her, and they find a video that seems intended to be used to extort money from him. But there is a puzzle: how can Marie, who appears to have her shoulder-length hair cut off in the video, grow it back in such a short time?

Then the feature writer, Donna Henry, is attacked in her hotel room by a man apparently able to change his appearance in an instant. Creek has to explain the two incidents, while not being distracted by Brendan Baxter's new TV show, featuring a lie detector used on contestants while answering intimate questions.

Creek is asked to come down to explain what is going on, and he brings Carla with him as she is having a marriage crisis.

Meanwhile, Adam Klaus is being sued for hypnotising a woman over the television, and agrees to go on a reality TV program Animal Farm, where the celebrities have to live with pigs in a pig-sty.
