Erin Coffey tries to prove her worth to her colleagues -and to her father, the Battalion Chief. Jack Malloy's dedication to the job jeopardizes his marriage.

Jack, struggling with his guilt over Phil's death, comforts his friend's survivors-but gives Phil's extremely competent replacement the could shoulder. Meanwhile, Bernie turns up the heat on the police to find a serial arsonist.

Dick's overprotectiveness drives Erin to request a transfer; Ray reluctantly posts bail for his brother; Jack's dislike for new recruit Michael intensifies, but his friendship with Phil's widow, Helen, blossoms; and Kay discovers a clue that may lead to the serial arsonist.

Erin's rescue and trip to the hospital prompts Dick to try to quit drinking; Jack and Kay share an impromptu interpersonal experience; Ray's efforts to help Bobby earn him the admiration of the public defender; Bernie zeroes in on the serial arsonist.

Jack and Kay's relationship sparks suspicion and jealousy in both Erin and Laura; J.B. shows a new side of himself to his colleagues; Bernie feels uneasy about Norman's police interrogation, and decides to conduct his own investigation.

Dick appears before a disciplinary board that will decide his future with the fire department; Jack encounters hostility from Erin, and helps an injured Bernie zero in on the serial arsonist; and Kay decides she wants more from Jack.
