Lovejoy ("No Mister, just Lovejoy") is an East Anglian antiques dealer who lives a somewhat hand-to-mouth existence, despite being a 'divvie' - a man who just "knows the right of something". Aided by his 'Barker', Tinker Dill, and an apprentice, Eric Catchpole, son of the local butcher, he sets out to unravel the meaning behind a coal carving of a Japanese firefly cage. His 'rival' is Charlie Gimbert, his landlord and owner of the local auction house. Soon, Lady Jane Felsham becomes part of the team.

Lovejoy buys a Welsh dresser, in which is hidden a valuable Arab wedding headdress, festooned with gold ducats. Catesby, the recently released from prison son of the dead man whose property was being sold at Gimbert's auction house, says that he was promised the dresser. Lovejoy sells the piece back, without the headdress. Catesby goes looking for him, armed with an axe. To complicate matters, an Income Tax officer is also after Lovejoy.

Lovejoy is trying to help a young woman trace a pair of Meissen figures, which she had sold to raise cash for a drug habit. When he comes across evidence of a double-cross by Charlie, he sets out to get even.

In the first season, in episodes 3 and 4, she is called Kate, and is played by Charlotte Edwards. In the sixth season, in episodes 67 and 69, she is listed as Viki, and is played by Amelia Curtis.In this episode Mark Penfold appears as DS Lloyd, however, he later appears in episode 20 as Robinson, the Pawnbroker.

After a robbery at the local museum, and the death of a local forger, which seem to be connected, Lovejoy goes on the trail of a hidden hoard of Roman coins in the Isle of Man. He soon discovers that a couple of Americans are also interested in the hoard.

When Sam Wendell dies of a heart attack, he leaves one small piece that he had forged. Strangely, he had told his wife that it was the key to a fortune. Lovejoy sets out to unravel the puzzle, dressing as a priest in the process.

Wanting to get away from cahrlie for a few days, Lovejoy accepts a job at a new antiques market in Norwich, which is owned by a client of Lady Jane's. He is soon convinced that the man is a con artist, and sets out to expose him. Along the way he sets out to trap another con man that is selling forged paintings.

With the aid of an ex-prison officer, who knew Lovejoy "in the nick", Lovejoy produces the goods, only to find that he has been conned. 'Crime and Punishment' - Linden and Tinker - make their only appearance!

Meanwhile, Harry is selling a Satsuma bowl to a Japanese Banker With the aid of the banker and an assortment of other odd characters, Lovejoy sets out to get back at Harry, and make some money.

Lovejoy returns from Spain, where he learned that he can't paint, and reacquaints himself with Eric (now in security), Tinker (who has joined a monastery), and Jane (who has had her haircut). Meanwhile, an old friend of Jane's, Victoria Cavero, comes to stay, but a South American ring she has for sale sets in motion strange events and danger for Jane.

An attempted robbery finds them in possession of a page from a rare chronicle, and the search is on for an expert - Brendan Hennessey. Tinker and Eric also try a bit of singing.

Jane's old dance teacher wants Lovejoy to sell a mirror. This then leads to a deal which involves the apparently one-eyed Roderick Frew. Jane informs Lovejoy that Alexander is broke, Felsham is in the hands of the receivers, and she is leaving.

Left to look after Felsham Hall until it has been sold, and show around prospective clients, Lovejoy uses the house as a showroom. This, however, does not go down well with the auctioneer - Charlotte Cavendish. Having agreed to show off some copies he then realises that some of these are the real thing. Charlie becomes the owner of Felsham Hall.

Lovejoy sets out to find the required amount in time. In so doing he finds the Kakiemon Tiger, but has to take care of any competitors. The team gains a new member when Beth Taylor gives Eric and Tinker a helping hand.

Meanwhile, Beth's father is unhappy about her working for Lovejoy Antiques.

Lovejoy is confronted with the news that he has distant cousins in America. Then, some items go missing from the house of Lord Wakering, where a female ghost still resides. Deciding to seek out the stolen goods, Lovejoy travels to America, where he is not all that welcome. Charlotte has to follow him and get him out of trouble.
