This series, created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, revolves around the life of U.S. Senator William Powers, a genuine good guy who, unfortunately, lacks the cunning to survive in the shark-infested waters of Washington politics. However, those qualities are in ample supply thanks to his family & staff, beginning with his wife, Margaret, whose top priority is maintaining her status in Washington, and who fancies herself as the woman behind the man. Also desiring to fill this role is aide Jordan Miller, the shameless mistress. Further assisting the senator is aide Bradley Grist, whose image as a man of power and influence is just that--an image.

Then, there is the rest of the family, starting with vain, ditzy daughter Caitlyn Van Horne; her submissive Congressman husband Theodore, who is always trying to find a way out of his life; and their son Pierce, who due to his status is unable to do the things other children do. The other members of this illustrious group are Charlotte, the overworked, under-appreciated maid, and Sophie Lipkin, the Senator's illegitimate daughter, clearly the most stable person of the lot, who makes up in character what she lacks in sophistication.
