The firm's accounts executive, Peter Baxter, is found murdered after a break-in at the now-closed factory. But the tensions that led to their earlier split are still present, and there is still the unanswered question of what happened to Ginger Foxton, a band member and the other co-writer, who disappeared 30 years previously, and his royalties. The disappearance was investigated by the now retired DI Owen Jenkins, who was Barnaby's superior officer when he was a sergeant. At the festival site Cully meets Hired Gun's new young manager, Simon Dixon, and there is instant mutual attraction, much to Barnaby's disapproval. But somebody is trying to kill the band members one by one, and Barnaby has to put aside his respect for the group to investigate who is responsible.

Zoe Stock, one of the most talented students, runs off to a nearby river after suffering a panic attack at the auditions. There she sees a woman drowning having left a baby on the bank. When Barnaby & Jones arrive, there's no evidence that the event happened, but Barnaby recognises similarities with a case that occurred nearly twenty years previously, when he was a junior police officer.

The number of sisters at the huge Tudor mansion used as Midsomer Priory, in the village of Midsomer Vertue, has fallen to four in recent years, and then one of them, Mother Thomas, is strangled to death. Barnaby & Jones wonder whether it could have been triggered by a disagreement with the senior Mother Julian, the wheelchair-bound Mother Jerome, or the recent recruit Sister Catherine, who is due to take her final vows shortly. There are other possible factors: the teenage couple recently caught in the Priory grounds, the broken stained-glass window in the Priory's chapel, the young priest Father Behan, the question of what would happen to the mansion if there are no longer enough nuns to comprise a community, and the Priory's antique silver collection which is found to be missing.

Barnaby & Jones try to uncover the different relationships between several of the locals and the murdered man's wife, former Kirov ballerina, Nina Morgan. NOTES

From Series 7 onwards, the assignment of the episodes to series is debatable, due to the erratic nature of ITV's broadcasts in the UK. Here they are now arranged according to the series in which they are grouped for release on DVD box sets in the UK (which is the same as at IMDb, and which may be the same as production order), as that is what is likely to be of most use now. The UK broadcast order has to be determined from the dates given; broadcast order in other territories may differ again, as may grouping for DVD box sets.

The episodes continue to be released on DVD round the world. As of August 2012:
Episodes 1 to 89 are out on Region 2 PAL disks in the UK
Episodes 1 to 81 are out on Region 1 NTSC disks in N America (82-85 probably due out in Fall 2012)
Episodes 1 to 89 are out on Region 4 PAL disks in Australia

Some novels by Caroline Graham on which the series is based are: The Killings at Badger's Drift [1987], Death of a Hollow Man [1989], Death in Disguise [1992], Written in Blood [1994], Faithful Unto Death [1996], A Place of Safety [1999], and Death's Shadow [?].

There is a behind-the-scenes book, Midsomer Murders [2003], by Jeff Evans.

There is also Joan Street's unofficial fan website.
