The Cosby Mysteries was a short-lived crime drama that never quite gelled. The lead character, Guy Hanks, was a New York detective who retired after winning the lottery and became a criminologist. Hanks was still connected within the department. Most of the cases came as a direct result of Guy's friendship with Det. Adam Sully.

Part of the reason the show failed was plot threads that seemed to go nowhere. Barbara Lorenz, Guy's love interest from the early episodes, was a character that seemed to pop in right in the middle of an investigation, completely ruining any building momentum. Rita Moreno played Hanks' housekeeper, a relationship that was never fully explained. The character again was a pointless annoyance that disrupted the storyline. Finally, Dante Beze played Guy's protégé, Dante. Beze's character never fit in, and the actor didn't help either. Unfortunately, a viewer had to listen very carefully to understand Beze's mumbly delivery, and even then it was difficult.

Toward the end of the series, new producers Lee Goldberg and William Rabkin were brought on board to shore up the show. The Barbara Lorenz and Dante characters disappeared. The show improved, but by then it was too late.
