This series showcased the police work of the Special Weapons And Tactics unit of the West California Police Department, a group of five Vietnam veterans whose military training and weaponry allowed them to tackle urban-jungle criminals such as snipers and terrorists for whom the regular police were ill-prepared. Hondo was the leader, whereas Kay specialized in communications, Street in scouting, and Luca and McCabe in marksmanship.
Viewers never suspected that the special "armor-plated" van they drove around in was actually just a former bakery truck painted blue.Although highly successful, the series was canceled because it was thought to contribute too much to the climate of unnecessary violence on TV. Barry DeVorzon composed the memorable theme.
