While attending Ashley's birthday party Chloe, a rich girl from upscale Malibu, meets Zack Morrison a middle class boy from the valley. Zack's friend Flipper and Chloe's brother Josh fight. Both are arrested. While hanging out with Bree, Ashely and Julie Nina is dared to sleep with Josh. She breaks a pact with Chloe and does. Because of the fight Zack's parents decide he should move in with his sister who lives in Malibu and Josh is kicked off the football team, which adds to his hatred to Zack. When Chloe's friend Teddy sets fire to his house to try and frame Zack, Chloe's loyalties to Zack are tested. When the South Valley high school is destroyed during an earthquake the "vals" are transferred to Pacific Coast High School.

Adjustments are necessary from both sides during the first week the Valley kids are transferred to Malibu's Pacific Coast High School. Teddy faces his peers who know about his attempt to burn down his own home; Zack is accepted into the accelerated English class, which separates him even further from his Valley friends; constant teasing from the snobby Malibu girls makes Zack's ex-girlfriend Kacey homesick for her former school so she decides to leave school; and Flipper gets a surprise visit from his older brother, Sandy who was just released from jail. Later in the week, when Josh and Chloe's mom, Suki, goes out of town, Josh decides to throw a party and everyone scrambles for dates. Josh goes with Ashley instead of Nina but in the end winds up with Nina.

Chloe is thrilled when her painting is selected for the school mural until she realizes the art teacher is interested in more than her artistic ability. Things begin to heat up romantically between Marc and Suki, who have their first date. Josh and Nina finally begin to understand what they want out of their new relationship.

When Chloe and Josh's estranged father makes a surprise visit after a long absence, the Walker home is filled with tension. As a means to rebel against their parents, Josh begins drinking again and Chloe decides to give up her virginity. Meanwhile, Nina fears she might be pregnant with Josh's child and the stressful situation makes her realize how much she values her friendship with Teddy. Also, Mouse, Flipper, and Benny become privy to a different side of the snobby Malibu girls when they hide a video camera in the locker room. Kacey comes back to school.

Zack, feeling pressured to keep up with his advanced English class, makes an unethical move to get ahead. When Nina travels out of town for a debate competition, both she and Josh struggle to remain faithful to each other. Kacey tries to keep the fact that she and her mother have recently become homeless a secret. Elsewhere, Flipper attempts to break a world record in order to earn Ashley's affection. Kacey's mom begins to work for the Russell's as a maid, in return she and Kacey can live in the Walker's garage apartment.

Things at Pacific Coast High become heated when Zack and Chloe face off against each other in the election for sophomore class president. Ashley is torn between participation on the track team to please her mother or quitting to enjoy her social life, which is no secret to Flipper. After Nina breaks up with Josh, he meets a sexy, older woman, Jill. Bree and Teddy begin seeing each other. Kacey scores a date with Josh's friend Seth who tells many he got lucky, which is a rumor according to Kacey.

Against his better judgment, Mouse hangs out with his brother's gang and unintentionally becomes involved in a robbery. Nina and Josh try to set up Teddy on a date, only to have the plan misfire. Also, everyone is excited about the upcoming Edwin McCain concert and rushes to find dates for the big event. Flipper has backstage passes and invites Ashley who does not believe him.

While volunteering at a confidential teen help line, Zack is shocked to receive a call from Chloe who admits to battling bulimia. Nina gets more than she bargained for when she finally attracts the eye of the upperclassman she's been pursuing. Also, in a warped attempt to win Ashley's affection, Flipper offers her advice to win over Josh.
